Future JSPN Meetings
History of JSPN Annual Meetings
JSPN also aims to encourage broad communication and friendship among its members and with other related organizations in Japan and abroad.
President Isao DATE OKAYAMA Univ. Neurosurgery |
The JSPN was founded in 1972 as a research society, and in 2012, it was transferred under the board of directors. I became the third President in 2019 and am now the current President. During this period, we introduced the Pediatric Neurosurgery Certification System in 2016 and JSPN became a General Incorporated Association in 2017.
Most JSPN members are neurosurgeons and are members of the Japan Neurosurgical Society. JSPN is also a subcommittee of the Japan Neurosurgical Society; therefore, we should function as a subcommittee. I am also a board member of the Japan Neurosurgical Society and a member of the Subcommittee Review Committee, so I would like to serve as a bridge between the two societies.
One of the unique features of JSPN’s management is that each committee has a director in charge and a chairperson. With the election of new officers, there was a partial change in both directors in charge and committee chairs. Under the new structure, the director in charge and chairpersons will continue to manage the society with good communication.
The journal Nervous System in Children has become an online journal, which introduces online submission and online peer review, followed by publication on J-stage. The number of submissions has increased greatly, and we have decided to increase the number of editorial board members to accommodate this increase. As more than one main article is now required to qualify for the Japan Neurosurgical Society’s board examination, as is the case with all journals (especially the Journal of Neurosurgery, which has reported a dramatic increase in the number of submissions), there have been restrictions on surgery and other procedures because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and physicians have had more time to write articles. The increase in the number of submissions is very good for the development of the journal, and we hope that the level of articles will also increase.
The Pediatric Neurosurgery Certification System was introduced in 2016. Now that 5 years have passed for those doctors who became certified in the first phase of the program, an examination for renewal has been conducted. This system was established to raise the level of medical care in pediatric neurosurgery, and we hope that it will continue to be effective. I hope that communication and collaboration among physicians in charge of pediatric neurosurgery will be promoted in various venues through conferences, journals, seminars, etc.
The COVID-19 pandemic continues throughout the year in 2020 and again in 2021. The conference was held independently via the web in 2020, and in 2021 it was held both on site and via the web. Thanks to the cooperation of the meeting president, institutions in charge, and above all, JSPN members, we have kept the number of participants at the same level as in previous years. The number of participants in educational seminars, which were held via the web for the past 2 years, exceeded that of previous years, and the results of the questionnaire survey revealed that many people welcomed the web-based seminar, which allows them to learn repeatedly. We will continue to strive for the further development of our society over the next 2 years, and we look forward to the cooperation of all members.
